In Memorandum
Apr. 27th, 2007 08:47 pmSo today was my Great Grandma's funeral. Leola was 100 (she would have been 101 in July.) She is survived by a brother, two daughters, five grandchildren, seven great grand children, and two great great granddaughters. All in all a full life and she is at peace with Our Lord now.
The first amazing story is that Leola's father ran the ferry on the Columbia river out of Vantage (before all the hydrodams were put in and widened the river.)When she was 14 (so about 1920) she swam the Columbia beside the ferry. Swimming the Columbia is quite the feet for some one older and today so for ateenage girl back then must have been really something. This is a picture of the ferry.

This next picture is how I mostly remember Leola and Randall (my Great Grandpa who died in 1996)
They lived at least part year in Hawaii for along time. I was in high school when Grandpa's health got bad enough that they had to move back to the mainland. In fact we used to spend Christmas in hawaii to visit them. (Nothing says Christmas like palm trees, pinapple, and snorkleing. Leola was in her 80's and still snorkleing with us. She used to do 4 and 5 mile charity walks in Hawaii and was always the winner in her age group.)
This picture is the first four generation picture with me in it.

and this is the four generations some 19 years later

And this last is of me with Leola on her 97th birthday.
Leola will be missed but she is in a much better and peaceful place. She left behind a legacy of adventure and love that I hope to live up to.
